Why Our Team Chose Our Community

Curious minds want to know why some of our healthcare professionals decided to join our community. Let's hear straight from the heart why they chose us.

My husband and I started looking for new employment opportunities for me and a suitable living environment for our expanding family; that is when we were introduced to Hearst. In 2023, following six years of work in other rural northern communities, we relocated to Hearst. Our criteria included seeking a welcoming community with amenities like daycare, reputable schools, and children's activities.

Hearst particularly appealed to my husband due to its extensive trail system and outdoor recreational opportunities, aligning with his passion for snowmobiling. For me, the decision to transition to Hearst was easy; as I could continue practicing comprehensive rural family medicine while maintaining a favourable work-life balance. The supportive team environment allows me to manage my schedule and workload, enabling me to establish a practice that suits our family’s needs.

The favourable cost of living and housing options allow us to reside in close proximity to the hospital, minimizing commuting time and facilitating the realization of our ideal home and property. Since our relocation, we have thrived in Hearst and wholeheartedly endorse the community and its living standards to those contemplating rural living in the north. The town's motto, "Hearst is Different," strongly resonates with us, and we can unequivocally attest to its positive accuracy.

I enjoy the challenge of working in a rural area where there are greater opportunities to get involved in different facets of medicine. I’ve been practicing family medicine in Hearst since 2001; since then, I’ve added anesthesiology to my qualifications and I now split my time between the operating room and my family practice.

There are many aspects that make my job enjoyable and fulfilling. Foremost is the tremendous all-around team spirit and support system provided by my colleagues. The people that I work with, be they from the office, the FHT, or the hospital are second to none. We have an amazing group of interdisciplinary health providers who help each other in providing the best possible care for our patients.

My favourite activities are cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter time, which are conveniently located just 10 minutes away from town. To unwind, I also like to relax in my hot tub at home while reading a good book.

Life is both peaceful and fulfilling here.

Dr. Shyanne Fournier, MD CCFP, Lead-Physician – Hearst Local Education Group (LEG), Associate Professor with NOSM University

Hearst has always been home to me, but it’s not before moving to Southern Ontario to complete my undergrad studies that I truly appreciated what Northern Ontario has to offer. You’re constantly surrounded by the great-outdoors, there is no traffic, and a small rural town offers a sense of community that you just can’t get anywhere else.

What’s even better; rural family medicine offers a wide scope of opportunities that you wouldn’t get otherwise. In the same week, you have the opportunity to engage in preventative care at the office, acute care in the emergency department, critical care as a hospitalist, and long-term care at the nursing home. There are also plenty of teaching, mentorship and health advocacy opportunities.

I had the privilege of completing my residency training here in Hearst (through NOSM University), and this is where I had my best learning opportunities. The local group of physicians are excellent mentors, and I feel very well supported as a new graduate. The Hearst Docs are family, and Hearst really is the ideal place to thrive.
